Overview
The Sigma 20mm 1.4 DG HSM Art is a state of the art wide-angle prime lens designed for Full Frame cameras but will work with APS-C sensors as well. Using over 50 years of lens making experience, particularly the knowledge gained from the 35mm 1.4 Art and the 24mm 1.4 Art, the 20mm 1.4 Art is the widest large aperture Art lens to date. The latest optical design allows for the utmost in image quality with careful attention paid to edge to edge performance. Through decades of experience in lens design and Sigma Global Vision lens manufacturing, the 20mm incorporates both “F” Low Dispersion (FLD) glass, and five Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass in a design of 15 elements in 11 groups. The combination of advanced optics and optimized lens power distribution minimizes spherical aberration, axial chromatic aberration and field curvature, producing outstanding image quality. With class leading performance, this lens is ideal for landscape photography, videography, astrophotography, lowlight/indoor photography and event photography. As with all Global Vision lines, the 20mm will be tested using the proprietary “A1” measuring system ensuring the highest standard of operation. The Sigma 20mm Art is compatible with the USB dock to update and customize and is also compatible with the Mount Conversion Service. A staple procedure for the Global Vision lines, every lens will be tested using the proprietary “A1” measuring system.

Lining up the camera perfectly level front to back and left to right is critical for capturing interiors full of lines, such as the spectacular St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky. The baptismal font in the foreground, the pews in the middle ground, and the altar in the background help create a strong sense of depth.

The two images were combined to give this result with both the train and the stars on the sky visible. I like the idea of this train racing through the cold snow forest under the clear night sky.

The Glacier lagoon in Iceland is close to highway number one, about 370 km (230 miles) east from Reykjavík and it is told to be one of the greatest wonders of nature in Iceland. This lagoon is a recent one, the result of a warming climate. The surface is at sea level and sea water flows into the lagoon at high tide. Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the glacier, Breiðamerkurjökull, and large icebergs float on the lagoon. The lagoon is not very wide but it is up to 250 meters deep which makes it the deepest lake in Iceland. Breiðamerkurjökull is an outlet of the Vatnajökull glacier.

Great Wide Lens
Great lens - focus on edges of groups is blurred a bit but could be my setting. Nice and heavy lens. The lens cap falls off all the time. Needs to be a screw on or tighter.

Fast but focus way off
Overall I was impressed with the build quality, this lens is solid and has a great feel in your hands. I bought this specifically to use with my Canon 5Ds which offers extremely high resolution images so the quality of the lens is extra important. I was impressed with the lens from the moment I mounted it to the camera and the focus was fast and locked on to whatever I aimed at.

However I was not overly impressed with the sharpness of my images so I did a critical focus test with a Spyder Lens Cal to see if I could micro adjust the lens for that camera as well as my 7D MKII which I sometimes use it on. Generally I find the focus of my other lenses are spot on or maybe need to be adjust a notch or 2 but with this new Sigma it was severely front focusing and I had to ratchet it back 12 clicks in the Micro Adjustment menu on both of my Canon bodies. To me that is just poor quality control on Sigma's part and I think this is the reason I sometimes see reviews where customers complain and say they returned the lens as it was soft on focus. Too late for me to return it, I may keep it or sell it as used as I now own the 12-24mm Sigma.

Best low-light wide angle lens around
I love the way this lens has opened up so many extremely low-light possibilities where an f/2.8 lens just wouldn't cut it. And being able to blur the background with such a wide lens is a nice bonus. It's super sharp and a great value for the price. I still shoot with a 16-35 2.8 (for both its ruggedness and versatility) when the light is sufficient, but this lens is a life saver when there is limited light or I need to bounce flash off a high dark ceiling.
