Overview

Sigma’s Macro 70mm F2.8 EX DG is a large aperture medium macro lens suitable for shooting the smaller things in our world that exist virtually unseen. A macro lens is one which will focus on a subject close enough to render it “life-size” on the image plane in your camera. It also has a “flat” field” front lens element so that it can shoot images of flat objects such as artwork or postage stamps and be tack sharp all the way across the image. This Sigma Macro 70mm F2.8 is ideally suited for taking pictures of insects or other small creature where a closer approach to the subject would scare them away. This greater distance also allows the photographer more flexibility in lighting the subject with natural light reflectors. Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide optimum color correction and sharpness throughout the entire zoom range and Super Multi-layer coating reduces flare & ghosting. A floating internal focus system enables a minimum shooting distance of 10.1 inches enabling ability to shoot with critical sharpness regardless of distance. So don’t miss the tiny insects, flowers of the world or the details in a stamp or coin collection or a piece of embroidery all of which are seldom noticed but offer a fascinating world if you look closely enough. Capture them with the Sigma Macro 70mm F2.8 EX DG.

The photograph embodies the game of romance about to be played as Michelle ponders the two timeless questions3/4"He loves me... he loves me not..." While 105mm might be thought of as a somewhat long-ish focal length for a cropped sensor camera like Sigma's SD-14 used to make this portrait, the fast macro lens allowed me to capture all of the sharpness and color without being right on top of the subject.

Fun with Stars and Stripes

70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro 1/15 sec F22 800

I love photographing macro subjects’ indoors on rainy days and I decided to experiment with a light box I had from the days of shooting slides.  I set the light table on the floor and placed an American Flag bandana on it effectively backlighting it.  I then elevated a clear plastic plate about 6 inches above the table and filled it with seltzer water.  I moved around until I found a pleasing composition using the central part of the plate as a diagonal element.  You can also try this with flowers and other subjects!

Summer Bloom High Key

70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro 1/13 sec F22 640

What I love about macro photography is how accessible it is to everyone and you can do it at any time of year.  Flowers are always my favorite subject and even in the winter months are available in most supermarkets! I was photographing the “Fun with Stars and Stripes” image using my old light box for illumination.  It was set it on the floor so that I could shoot down at my subjects and straddle the table with my tripod.   I had bought a bouquet of flowers that day to photograph as well.  When I grabbed one of the daisies from the bouquet, I accidentally dropped it on the light table as I was walking by and it landed upside down on the table.  I loved the almost x-ray look it gave to the daisies and I then took a whole bunch more and just dropped them onto the table.  I then took a sunflower out of the remaining bouquet and placed it in the middle. As the center of the sunflower is dark, I used a hand held LED light to open up the center.

Fire Bellied Toad

70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro 1/250 sec F14 800

Underwater photography has always intrigued me but the time and cost to become proficient at it just didn’t fit into my schedule or my budget!  I am always dreaming of new ways to use my macro lenses and after a trip to the aquarium; where photography is difficult at best, I decided I would take the same approach as photographing through glass but at the convenience of my own home.  The Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro would be perfect for this!  Off to the local pet store I went and purchased a 2&1/2 gallon fish tank and 2 fire bellied toads.  I then went to a local pond and used a container to grab some duckweed out of it.  I placed a stone and the duckweed into the tank and then the toad.  I used 2 printed backgrounds (one of a sky and one of dark out of focus greenery) and carefully positioned them at the water line.  I also used a gold reflector to light the underside of the toad and a friend to constantly clean the glass of the toads’ footprints. They now reside in my large fish tank upstairs.
