Sigma 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM | A 1/320 sec F7.1 4000

This image of Shay was created using natural light only in the middle of the day.  Probably the worst time to photograph outside.  We went looking for a background that would complement her outfit and fortunately the one we found was in open shade.  I used Sigma’s 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM | A  lens for its telephoto ability of roughly 75-100mm.  Never quite sure how I’m going to crop my image, I love having this flexibility.  Extremely sharp and fast at any focal length, I also like the fall off I can get when photographing with a wide-open aperture. This lens is fast becoming another must have for me.

Lacks PDAF
I have this 50–500 lens for use with MC-11 and Sony a6500 camera.

Images are just brilliant and bokeh beautiful, Sunstars at f/16 look very nice. Five stars for image quality.

Unfortunately phase detection AF does not work with MC-11 and Sony a6500. Because camera is using contrast detection AF, it leads to slow and unreliable focusing – even sometimes in bright light conditions. SIgma: is PDAF something that could be enabled with firmware update? In low light conditions it is hard to have AF working.

I tested lens also with TC-1401 teleconverter. Teleconverter does not change lens behaviour at all. Its presence is not even shown in camera settings at all. Zoom range is reported to be 50–100 and f-numers f/1.8–16. Should firmware upgrade to MC-11 or lens fix this?

I have latest firmwares in my camera, MC-11 and 50-100 lens.

Lack of PDAF drops price stars to two. At this price it simply should work.

Outstanding Lens!
I have subtracted one star from Value for the lack of weather sealing on a lens of this price range. I have not found the lack of OS to be a problem. You can overcome it with shutter speed. The sharpness and image quality of this lens is amazing and the backgrounds melt away at F1.8. Great lens Sigma!

great first impressions
I bought this lens yesterday. it is a solid performer. Truly a no-brainer for anyone with a crop sensor camera looking for a lens in this focal length. The image quality and sharpness is as good as it gets. Even shooting at high ISO's I am not seeing much discernible noise, I get noticibly more noise out of my Canon L glass lenses (argument could be made they aren't designed for aps-c). Looking forward to learning this lens and using it's capabilities. I don't think it will be coming off my 80D any time soon.
The build quality is solid. I love the fact that it zooms and focuses internally. It is a bit heavy but that comes with quality glass. I do wish it had IS but thus far I haven't missed not having it. It's just nice to know it's there to save a shot when needed.
It would be amazing if Sigma could put something together like a 24-105 f1.8. Maybe down the road, but for now.. I will suffer in bliss with the 50-100 and save a little more for the 18-35 f1.8

This lens is TACK sharp! I took a few test shots the other day and I was SO impressed! The ONLY negative to this lens is that it is HEAVY weighing a little over 3 pounds with no image stabilization! That can be fixed if you use a tripod though! Also, it would have made this lens a lot more expensive which I am glad it's not. I am so impressed with this lens and am certain it is worth every penny I spent on it and I can't wait to shoot with it more. The best part is that it's like 3 primes rolled into ONE lens and, looking at many reviews on you tube, this has proven to be SHARPER than those prime lenses even though it's got more elements. SO SO SO happy I bought this lens; it goes well with my Sigma 18-35 f 1.8

I am confident it will be a great tool for photographers that are interested in the Sigma 50-100mm lens. Both of my hands with thumbs up plus your two hands with thumbs up.

Highly recommended!
My 4th art lens and I've come to depend upon Sigma glass to fulfill my photographic vision. The only lenses in my go bag are now the most excellent 18-35mm and the 50-100mm. I can capture pretty much anything that I'm interested in with the same quality. If you're an aps-c shooter you should seriously consider one of these lenses,

First few shots!
I have to say, I am very happy with this choice. The lens built quality is much better then expected. This is my first Sigma lens, I have never had the confidence to by one, but now Its a whole new story.

I can recommend this lens pretty much! I wanted to get a 50mm 1.8 and a 85mm 1.8 lens, but now I have them both in one lens and it does a much better job.

The only thing I can leave ass a negative remark is that I have back focusing issues, however as I am now getting this USB dock to optimize it, won't cause any further trouble for me in the future. And the reason why I am not downgrading this lens because of this issue is that I have the same issue on my Nikon lenses, and there is no option to fine tune them like this, so I have to live with it and hope that the AF-Fine tuning helps me a bit which is built in my D7000 body.

Great job Sigma!
