- Overview
-
Sigma’s APO 300-800mm F5.6 EX DG HSM is another unique lens in the line of Sigma offerings. An ultra telephoto as no other camera or lens manufacturer offers the serious photographer! Featuring a constant aperture of F5.6 throughout the entire zoom range, this lens is ideal for photographing wildlife when there is no way of controlling the distance of the animal to the camera. With a simple turn of the zoom ring, the photographer can instantly adjust the composition of the image without moving or disturbing the subject. Similarly, the zoom accommodates sporting photography such as soccer or surfing where the rapidly changing distance of the action requires massive changes in focal length in a matter of seconds. Two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide optimum color correction & sharpness throughout the entire zoom range. At the rear of the lens, a drop in 46mm filter holder is provided so that the photographer can easily add inexpensive color correction or light balancing filters. A perfect lens for surveillance use, its stealth black finish is unobtrusive and easily concealed.

Playful Pup- Yellowstone National Park | Wyoming USA
Roman Kurywczak
300-800mm F5.6 EX DG APO HSM 1/640 sec F8 800
I been to Yellowstone countless times and had never seen a free roaming wolf. Imagine my surprise when on the last day of my trip in 2008 I would spend the entire day photographing not just one wolf but a whole pack! Even more amazing would be that I would be able to do that all alone with just another photography friend but no one else. It all started late one morning as we were driving through the park and I spotted a dark shadow moving through a field. At first, we thought it was a bear but quickly realized that it was not just one wolf but a whole pack moving through. As we grabbed for our gear out of the car, the pack crossed the road and disappeared into the woods. It was thrilling just to witness but I wanted more. We quickly jumped into the car to see where they were headed. As we rounded a bend we found a lone pup standing in the road howling. He quickly vanished into the woods once again and appeared to be heading back to where they originally came from. My experience told me that the pack would not leave a pup and they had to be close. We scouted a picnic area off the main road and soon found the entire pack in an open grassy field. We would not approach too closely and I was sure glad to have the reach of the 300-800! This image is of the pup as he was playing with mom while she kept an eye on us. I spent the next 6 hours just staying put as the pack went about their business. This has been one of my greatest thrills as a wildlife photographer.
Leopard Play- Northern Serengeti Tanzania, East Africa
Roman Kurywczak
300-800mm F5.6 EX DG APO HSM 1/2000 sec F8 800
I had been out on tour for about a week with my group when we came upon this leopard family in the tall grasses. They were hiding low in the grass as a troupe of elephants went passing by with one full grown male almost stepping on the twins as they were lying under the broken tree. After the elephants passed, the two resume playing up and down the tree and allowed us some great opportunities to photograph these elusive cats. The zoom capability of the lens allowed me to quickly recompose as they chased each other around the tree.
Crossing the Mara River | Northern Serengeti- Tanzania, East Africa
Roman Kurywczak
300-800mm F5.6 EX DG APO HSM 1/1000 sec F8 800
Many people ask me what my greatest experience has been as a wildlife photographer and even though I have had many thrills, nothing compares to witnessing a herd of wildebeest (or Gnu) crossing the Mara River. It is truly a spectacle as thousand of animals gather along the shore with hungry crocs infesting the water. I have no idea what drives them to cross at such peril back and forth but once a crossing starts, most of the animals in a herd that can range from the hundreds to well into the thousands will cross. This is where the zoom capability of the Sigma 300-800mm lens really shines and has no equal. The zoom versatility and reach allowed me to compose on just an individual gnu or quickly recompose on the herd as they began their perilous journey. I am already looking forward to this year’s trip in August to get a chance at my dream image of a croc leaping out of the water to get one of the gnu.
African Fish Eage
Roman Kurywczak
300-800mm F5.6 EX DG APO HSM 1/2500 sec F7.1 800
This is an image of an African Fish Eagle taken on my tour to Tanzania late in the afternoon in the swamps of Tarangire National Park. The extra reach of the 300-800 allowed me to photograph this spectacular bird quite far off in the distance with the swamp grasses making a nice background.
Serengeti
Roman Kurywczak
300-800mm F5.6 EX DG APO HSM 1/1000 sec F8 800
This is one of my favorite images I have ever taken with the 300-800. We had just gotten to the northern Serengeti in Tanzania along the Mara River when a massive herd started to cross the river. The versatility of the zoom allowed me to easily compose and recompose the scene as the action unfolded in front of me. The almost painterly quality of the image was due to all the dust that the herd had kicked up while they milled around the shore and is still one of the most memorable moments I have ever experienced out in nature.
Roseate Spoonbill
Roman Kurywczak
300-800mm F5.6 EX DG APO HSM 1/2500 sec F6.3 800
I have photographed thousands of birds with my 300-800 but the Roseate Spoonbill ranks up there with one of my favorites! The versatility of the zoom range allows me to easily find and track the subject and fire away once it gets into range. A good gimbal style head allows you to effortlessly pan and makes the lens practically weightless. Photographing flying birds is definitely a rush.
Buffalo
Roman Kurywczak
300-800mm F5.6 EX DG APO HSM 1/640 sec F7.1 800
Buffalo are some of the most difficult subjects to photograph. At most times of the day, their fur and heads become a black hole so it is imperative to photograph them in very early or very late light! The reach of the 300-800 allows me to work at a safe distance and the zoom versatility allows me to isolate a subject in amongst the herd.
