Overview

The 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro HSM OS is the first lens in the Contemporary line of Sigma’s Global Vision. The Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 was designed to be the ideal all-purpose lens for APS-C DSLRs. With a versatile focal length and macro capability, the 17-70mm F2.8-4 is also equipped with a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) and an Optical Stabilizer (OS) for superior image quality. The HSM ensures quiet, accurate, and fast autofocusing while the OS compensates for camera shake when shooting handheld. The design of the 17-70mm includes state-of-the-art TSC material (Thermally Stable Composite), which allows for a durable construction as well a reduction in size by 30% compared to conventional models. Two FLD glass elements (with performance equal to fluorite) are incorporated along with one SLD element to reduce color aberration at the highest degree and obtain unmatched image quality. The 17-70mm F2.8-4 Macro DC HSM OS is compatible with the Sigma USB dock for an increased level of customization, including firmware updates as well as focus parameter adjustment changes. The perfect all-purpose travel lens, the 17-70mm F2.8 Macro DC HSM OS is a must have for any camera bag.

USB Dock Compatibility

Sigma has developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus.

*USB Dock is sold separately.

Great Lens, Great Quality, Great Value
This lens has been to Europe with me twice. I recently took it to France as my primary travel lens. I cannot say enough good things about it. With only two lens options in my bag (this vacation), a super wide and the 17-70, I found this lens on my camera for the majority of the trip due to its versatility and ability to take excellent photos in low light. This was my first non-kit lens purchase and I have had nothing but a stellar experience with it. My still photos are tack sharp. Although I don't shoot much video, the few occasions I did also yielded wonderful results. This lens is perfect for a casual enthusiast or pro-sumer. A big step up from a kit lens that hits the sweet spot between high quality, value and affordability. I have over 30 yrs SLR experience Canon (AE-1) and carry a Canon T6s today. This lens has all the bells and whistles. Point and shoot or full manual if desired. Build quality is impressive and so is it's function. This lens is remarkable and a extremely good value.

The best you can get for studio work
I was looking for a lens with low distortion and chromatic aberration for studio portraits. I usually shoot around F5.6 at 35-50mm on D5500. I was blown away looking at the results from this lens. Both distortion and chromatic aberration are almost non-existent in this range. It's razor sharp and has an excellent contrast all over an image. It's as good as lenses 4-5 times it's price from 24-70mm at F4-F8.
This lens does show some distortion and chromatic aberration from 17-24mm at full wide aperture. However it's not bothersome for A4 size prints. It works very well as a travel, outdoor portrait and event photography lens. I doubt better lenses exist with these parameters.
