Overview

The APO Macro Sigma 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is a high performance telephoto macro lens designed for Full Frame sensors but may also be used with smaller APS-C size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 260mm with most cameras. The 180mm F2.8 has a large aperture to handle any lighting scenario and the macro capabilities allow focusing down to 1:1 magnification ratio at its closest working distance of 18.5 inches. A Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures quiet, high speed, and accurate autofocusing while an Optical Stabilizer (OS) compensates for camera shake when shooting hand held. The 180mm F2.8 macro also incorporates a floating Internal Focusing system which reduces aberration during shooting working together with three FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass elements for superior correction of color aberration. This lens has a rounded 9 blade diaphragm creating an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image and is also compatible with Sigma APO teleconverters.

Taken during the Sinulog Festival in Cebu City, Philippines last January 2014. It's a feast for the Sto. Nino with lots of dancing, floats and other contingents. The Sigma 180mm f/2.8 macro lens did a good job in capturing this fast moving subject considering macro lenses are known to be slow in focusing thus making this lens a versatile lens. I paired this lens with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III.

Just as I'd never fish in a barrel of fish, I never manipulate nature for convenience. When rain begins to taper off, I'm out in the last of it shooting. Today's rain rewarded me with some small, beautiful moments that only a macro lens could capture.

Orange Hibiscus, Longwood Gardens Kennett Square, PA

APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM 1/160 sec F32 800

I often visit gardens on conservatories to photograph flowers.  Most of the time, they do not allow tripods, so I just use my twin flashes or a ring light as this allows me to achieve the depth of field I want and still let me hand hold.  I walked through the conservatory full of many hibiscuses and settled on the one as the petals were on the same focal plane as the stigma.  Having the flash units at the front of the lens allows me to get very tight on my subjects.

Rainy Water Lily, Longwood Gardens Kennett Square, PA

APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM 1/100 sec F29 800

Rainy days are great for macro photography and I often visit gardens on conservatories when the weather forecast calls for just such conditions.  Most of the time, they do not allow tripods, so I love using my twin flashes or a ring light so that I can hand hold.  I was photographing inside the conservatory while it was raining heavily but quickly went outside to the water lily ponds as soon as the rains subsided.  The extra reach of the 180mm really came in handy as I strained at the edge of the pond to compose this beautiful bloom in the middle of the pond.  There were many other leaves around the lily that weren’t pretty so the extra length allowed me to compose tightly on the center without falling in!

Bud, Bloom and Leaf- Longwood Gardens Kennett Square, PA

APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM 1/100 sec F29 800

Rainy days are great for macro photography but on this visit to the conservatory the weatherman was very wrong!  I wasn’t going to turn back home after driving for over 2 hours so I decided to make the best of it.  After photographing inside the conservatory for a while where the light was more diffused, I went out to the water lily pools to see what I could do even with the sunny conditions.  I under exposed the ambient light by about 1 stop and  powered my twin flashes up about 1 stop creating a balance of flash and ambient light. The extra reach of the 180mm again came in handy to allowing me to isolate this beautiful bud, bloom, and leaf in the middle of the pond.  The water is black because the gardens dye the water to keep the algae bloom in check.
