My image was based on the idea of washed up mermaids after being inspired by fashion photographer Steven Meisel's editorial for Italian Vogue 'Water & Oil'. I wanted to create a fashion based shoot with my model styled to look as if she had just been washed up. We used a white leotard and wrapped the model Chelsea in white boat net amongst the seaweed and rocks of a bay in Morecambe, UK.

I wanted to take a series of food images for my portfolio and for this one I used a distressed surface, loose ingredients and props. Using the Sigma 24-70mm I was able to compose the image as I wanted and with the quality glass I was assured to end up with a sharp and correctly coloured image. The image was lit by window light diffused with some tracing paper and shadows filled with mirrors and white card.

He tells us:I was able to capture this image with great results due to the following factors: It was a cloudy and  drizzly mid morning, with the foliage just starting to turn color, while using a ND filter and the wonderful Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG HSM on my Canon 7D. It is amazing how well this lens suits the Canon! It’s fast and precise focus makes it feel like a more expensive lens for half the price. While walking around a local market, I came across a couple of street performers playing all kinds of music. They were really quite good, and there sound was very organic - with a bluesy (if that is a word) edge. The 70-200 allowed me to get this shot without getting in the way. From the textures of the wooden platter to those in the bread and crackers along with the organic nature of the radishes, recording color and detail were foremost considerations in choosing the SD1 and the 24-70 f/2.8 DG HSM zoom lens. I think of the SD1 as a very high quality medium format camera in a cropped sensor DSLR body. The results speak for themselves.

The goal of this photo was to make the viewer do a double-take. At first glance it would look like identical twins or perhaps clones. Upon closer inspection the viewer will realize that one of the models is a mannequin while the other is a 'real person'. I chose the SD1 for this project because a huge print sizes the viewer would be able to examine the differences between the two subjects. One would have skin detail and texture, while the other would have smooth, plastic skin. The SD1's amazing resolution would be able to capture this detail, along with the detail in the mesh dress. Furthermore, also capture detail in the reds and shadows of the photograph.

This image is all about color and texture. Whether the fine textures of the jacket, the detail on the glasses, or the threads of the dress, fine detail in texture was key. Furthermore, the rich and varied color tones also create visual interest. By using the SD1, I was able to enlarge the file to 3x4ft and large and still see beautiful detail in every texture as well as accurate color throughout.

This session was the first chance I had to use the Sigma 24-70mm lens and its becoming one of my favorites.  It focuses amazingly fast which I needed while photographing Alex and her horse.  The sun was coming up quickly and I was losing that sweet light, all while Alex and Lily were walking away from me.  I love to be spontaneous when I’m shooting it allows me to capture what’s real. This lens responded beautifully to my ever changing focal point. I wanted my viewers to see this image and feel the calmness of this relationship and the beauty of the land.

This portrait of Melissa was a very difficult session for me.  I was on a cruise ship in the middle of a storm called Sandy.  We had 25 ft. swells and pouring rain for two days.  In order to photograph that day, we had to go up to the top floor of the ship and use whatever available light we could find.  Fortunately we found enough light and no one got sick.  I placed Melissa up on the edge of the window and used it as a backdrop.  The room was curved so the ambient light was beautiful, so was Melissa. The graphics I used to enhance the background came from Graphic Authority.

When photographing in the late afternoon with direct sunlight, my favorite thing to do is to take my subject and turn their back to the light.  You get this wonderful glow, a rim light.  This creates almost an aura around your subject.  I placed Madison on the edge of the window so that she would be covered in light, keeping her face in the shade.  As you can see, it made for a beautiful portrait.

I don’t often photograph landscapes, but I came across this amazing scenery on a drive through the Smoky Mountains and decided to photograph the “Ending of Fall”.  Most of the trees still had some life left to them, but the tree in the front had already lost all its leaves.  I loved the way it stood out from the rest.  It became the main character of my story.

Working with the Ice Light allows me to create a little more drama in the lighting. In this case we wanted to create a little more of an old Hollywood look. I chose the 24-70 for this image because it is a workhorse! I had the scene carefully lit so I wanted to make sure I got the most bang for the buck with the images. The 24-70 allows me to capture the shot close up, full body and everything in between without having to take time to change my lenses out.

Recently, I shot in a beautiful new hotel in Brooklyn, NY. Although I rented a suite, it was very small. (This is NY after all!) When unexpected moments happen on a shoot, it’s your job as the photographer to make it work. In this case it meant using every inch of the room… including the bathroom! We took a ton of different fun shots using the walls, floor and at the end of the shoot we decided to take a risk, throw on the water and use the shower itself.  Since the suite itself was small, you can only imagine the bathroom was too. Luckily I had the 24-70 on me that day.

Once again, this was shot in a small hotel room in Brooklyn, NY. After I took some close up shots, I wanted to make sure to get some pull backs showing Catherine in the shower itself. I like the glass wall and the geometric feel the lines give to the image, so it was important to capture that.  I was actually had one foot in the shower stall with her and shot at 27mm because the space was so tight. It was the only way to be able to  have her in the frame as well as the environment around her.

Canon 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM 1/125 sec F3.2

I have a VERY small studio in Long Island City, Queens. It’s only about 10x20 and I share it with someone else. Because of this, I need to make every inch work. I am on the third floor of a 3 story walk up. The beauty of that is that we have a long hallway of stairs that are really interesting. This shot was taken at the top of the stairs. What I love about this spot is that the window is actually next to her on the right. I use a large reflector to wrap the light around to hit the wall next to it. Then I place her in the light. What I love is how the light sweeps passed her body giving me gorgeous highlights and shadows emphasizing the beautiful structure of her body and her face. Especially her incredible cheekbones.
