Overview

The Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 II DG HSM is a premium wide angle zoom lens designed for full frame DSLRs but will work with APS-C cameras with an effective increase in focal length. Four FLD glass elements (with performance equal to fluorite) and one SLD element (Special Low Dispersion) ensure premium image quality from edge to edge. Three glass mold elements and one hybrid aspherical lens allow for a lightweight and durable construction while the super multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting. The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures quick, quiet and accurate autofocusing and also features full-time manual focus override.

Building at night

Canon 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM II 6 seconds f16 1600

Needed to get an exterior shot of this property for a client and the 12mm was the only lens i had that was wide enough to get the entire 23 storey building in. I am a real estate photographer and if I could have only one lens in my entire kit - I would chose this one hands down.

Walter Arnold's Rolling Fog in the Hills

12-24mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM II

This week’s Fan Photo of the Week was taken by photographer Walter Arnold made with the Sigma’s new 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 DG II HSM. His story behind the shot:Driving home at night  on July 25th, 2012  from New York to North Carolina I passed into Virginia just after a heavy rain. The heat quickly turned it to rolling fog in the hills. I sped along the interstate hoping for an exit, and when I found one I turned onto a country road full of farms, white picket fences, vineyards and rolling hills. It was such serendipity! This image is not an HDR; it is a single shot from the Nikon D800 with the new Sigma 12-24mm!To see more of Walter’s work, check out his website and  Facebook and Flickr pages!

On a recent trip to Blackdown Tableland National Park I used the opportunity to try my new Sigma 12 to 24mm DG HSM 2 lens to capture the ruggedness of what is paradoxically a harsh yet beautiful area. The falls here are known as Gudda Gumoo (Rainbow waters) by the native aboriginal Ghungalu people and hosts several ponds as the falls and cascades makes it's way down through the sandstone walled gorge.

Mt. Kirkjufell

12-24mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM II 1/25 sec for the sky and 0.6 sec for the foreground F22 400

This is an image of Mt. Kirkjufell in Iceland and was one of the first times I used the Sigma 12-24.  During the summer months in Iceland, sunset and sunrise can occur very close to each other.  This was around 1am at sunset and right after the color in this scene dissipated, the colors of the sunrise started to show up!  This is a manual two-exposure blend to capture the foreground details and a second exposure for the much brighter sunset sky.

Balanced Rock

12-24mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM II 30 seconds F4.5 6400

This is an image of Balanced Rock in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah.  A very high ISO of 6400 was needed to capture the Milky Way and stars as they rose over the formation.  I used a flashlight to light paint the rocks.  Night photography opens up a whole new world to us and I really do enjoy the parks even more after the sun goes down!

Park Avenue

12-24mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM II 1.5 hours F4.5 100

This is an image of the Park Avenue area in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah recreating the cover shot of my night photo e-book.  Only difference in this image is that the moonlight provided the illumination for the rocks.  A rock solid tripod and head are needed for these long exposures of an hour or more.

Upper Peninsula of Michigan

12-24mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM II 0.6 sec F22 500

2013 was the first time I have ever been to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  I was equally as excited as I was going to be able to use the 12-24 on the many wonderful waterfalls to be found in the area.  I can spend hours around waterfalls and the extra wide angle the lens provides allows me to get the sweeping vistas I am always looking for.  I always wear at least knee high boots as I almost always find myself standing in the water with my gear.
