I believe that the Ithaca / Watkins Glen area of New York has the greatest concentration of sizable (and picturesque) waterfalls per square mile of anywhere in the United States. In the upper gorge of Buttermilk Falls State Park, water drops twenty-five feet over several shelves before swirling below. A Sigma circular polarizing filter, a steady Gitzo tripod, and a remote trigger produced tack sharp rocks yet oh-so creamy water patterns. Most time exposures of waterfalls use shutter speeds between, say, 1/4 second to a about two seconds. In this case I chose to really build the softness of the cascades and smoothly depict the white eye of the whirlpool below, so I left the shutter open on this dimly lit morning for almost a half a minute.

It was a beautiful night in Valladolid, Mexico. We were walking around the old town section and the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was beautifully illuminated.

After seeing the tall Aira Force falls, and not being happy with the shots I was getting, I went to the top of the falls and found this far more picturesque waterfalls, the colours in the water and on the rocks were stunning...so peaceful.

A.D. Wheelers Valhalla

10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC (HSM)*

Our Fan Photo of the Week for May 21st was made by A.D. Wheeler with a Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 on an infrared-converted Sony a55 camera. He tells us:I called the shot “Valhalla” probably because I had the movie Thor playing in the background while processing the shot.  I generally look at my photo and blurt out the first thing that comes to mind for the title.  I felt this shot had a very dreamy, other-worldly feel to it so “Valhalla” just seemed to fit.   The photo was taken on my family’s property in upstate New York on a Sony a55 mirrorless DSLT camera that I hand converted to full spectrum IR.  If you are interested you can check out a tutorial that I have written on my blog about the process. I used the Sigma 10-20mm f4/-5.6 lens using a screw on Marumi 720nm filter for the shot.Anyone who knows me, knows how I rave about this lens.  I love the dramatic look that it gives my landscape work. Combine that 10mm wide angle with the glowing white world that infrared produces and it’s a win-win!  Definitely a very addicting style for me.I am a self-taught photographer and I love pushing the boundaries of my camera, lenses, and my post-processing.  I focus primarily on landscape and what I coin, “abandonscape” fine art photography.  “Abandonscape” refers to the art of photographing abandoned buildings and sites of ruin and decay.I specialize mostly in HDR  photography as I feel it allows me better control over the available natural light in a given scene and more accurately portrays what the human eye can see.  My process is dedicated to replicating not only the scene as my vision sees it, but also conveying the “sense of wonder” that I felt while exploring it.  While I do not consider myself an explorer, I do love the adventure in finding beauty and art in generally unseen places.Check out my website @ ADWheelerPhotography.com for tutorials, galleries, panoramas, videos and where you can also find out how to connect with me socially on Facebook, Google Plus, 500px, twitter, and several other social media sites.  @ADWheelerPhoto on Twitter. /ADWheelerPhoto on Facebook

Christian Guamanzara's Calm Waters

10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC (HSM)*

This week’s Fan Photo of the Week is by photographer Cristian Guamanzara made with the 10-20mm F4-5.6 DC HSM lens. He tells us:I call this shot “Calm Waters” because when you look at how serene and calm the water looks it brings you a sense of calmness. I decided to head out into NYC on a cold November night in 2010. I walked around for a bit trying to see where the ideal spot would be. Finally I found the perfect location and began running test shots. I took out my Sigma 10-20mm F/4-5.6 and mounted the camera on my Manfrotto tripod. I finally got the right exposure and composition right and was finally happy with the shot! I started working on the pictures a few days later until I came to this shot, I did some touch ups and when the picture was finally done, I just sat back and admired it. I loved how the picture came out! I immediately posted it up all over the place and the audience loved it. I had a lot of people telling me they wanted to but the picture and had a few also to use it as their screen savers.About C3Photography:  I picked the name C3 because my wife, my son and my name all start with the letter C. I specialize in automotive photography – I shoot for wheel companies both in the East and West Coast. My passion has always been cars – I used to collect car posters as a kid and hang up in my room. Now the pictures that I hang up are shots taken by me. In early 2009 I started taking pics with a Nikon D60 and fell in love with the art of photography. I started practicing almost daily and by late 2009 I actually moved up to a D90 and I started taking pics of friends’ cars and began networking little by little at car meets until C3 as a brand gained recognition through most of the Northeast car forums and has been expanding since.Portfolio Links:500px.com/C3Photographyc3photography.zenfolio.comfacebook.com/C3Photography

Chris Hunter's Dawn at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge

10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC (HSM)*

This week’s Fan Photo of the Week was taken by photographer Chris Hunter made with the Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DG HSM, on a tripod. He tells us:This photo was taken at one of my favorite early morning photography locations, Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, located near the beaches of Newport, Rhode Island. The Wildlife Refuge is located on a unique peninsula at the far southeastern end of Aquidneck Island. It offers sweeping panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as scrub brush and heavily vegetative areas as well. Coming here early in the morning, you can capture some amazing pre-dawn photography. This was the first set of images captured when I arrived at the Wildlife Refuge. Knowing that there was going to be a very wide exposure latitude to the scene, I setup on a tripod and first exposed for the foreground with a 10 second exposure. The Sigma 10-20mm lens performs great at f/16, and that aperture also allowed for a long exposure to let the waves become blurred with movement. Next, I took a series of photos, stepping down about two stops each exposure. This allowed me to darken the image, resulting in the photos that make up the midground and sky background (5 seconds and 2 seconds respectively).I manually combined the resulting images in Photoshop, using masks to blend the three image layers together. On top of that, a levels and hue saturation adjustment was done, and finally the image was sharpened using the Smart Sharpen filter. Chris Hunter is a professional graphic artist, photographer and website designer from Middletown, Rhode Island. He has been employed in the creative field for over a decade working in print design, photography, front end website design, digital prepress and identity / branding design. He is the owner of www.NewportRIphotos.com and also owns a print design, website development and multimedia production company Collective Thought Media. Chris is available for private photography instruction and will be running a series of photography workshops in the summer of 2012 in Newport, Rhode Island. You can view more of Chris’ work at: www.NewportRIphotos.com and follow him on Facebook!

Angela Cable's Double Rainbow

10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC (HSM)*

This week’s Fan Photo of the Week was taken by photographer Angela Cable made with the Sigma’s 10-20mm F4-5.6 DC HSM. Her story behind the shot:This area is about 16 miles south of Rock Springs, WY off of Wyoming 430 South, on County Road 48 (Salt Wells Road). There are three unnamed formations, including this one, that are immediately visible and easily accessible to 2WD vehicles. They are all evening shots, the sun would rise behind them causing backlighting problems. This part of Sweetwater County consists primarily of high plains desert with sedimentary rock formations. Sweetwater county covers over 10,000 square miles, we are the largest county in Wyoming, and we are larger than six states  More information on Sweetwater County can be found at these sites:Rock Springs Field OfficeSweetwater County Visitor’s GuideWyoming Outdoor CouncilI’ve lived in southwest Wyoming for 35 years and still routinely find new areas to visit although this is one of my favorites along with the area surrounding Aspen Mountain, the Killpecker Sand Dunes and the Seedskadee Nat’l Wildlife Refuge. On this particular day, I’d gone down there to photograph the third formation, just down the road from this one, that I like to call “Desert-henge” because there are these massive blocks of rock that have fallen off the cliffs above forming a weirdly semi-circular pattern around the base of the thing. It began sprinkling and I realized that the time of day was perfect for a rainbow. As I headed back to the car, it began to appear over the formation so I hurried back down the road to the other two formations since there is more sagebrush at these ones for foreground interest. The rainbow lasted perhaps 20 minutes and I got happily soaked Here’s the link to the Wyoming album, which includes this image.

Karan Kauchhur's Perfect Storm

10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC (HSM)* f/13.0

This week’s Fan photo of the week was taken by Karan Kauchhur using Sigma’s 10-20mm F4-5.6 DC HSM.I shot this image on evening of August 10th. I checked the weather app, the sky was supposed to clear a bit after the scattered thunder storms all day and this sounded like perfect photo weather.I drove to Sandy Hook beach because I could see some dramatic clouds still lingering around the horizon. Sun was to set at 8 pm, I reached this spot at around 7:45 pm. The cloud was almost over head and the natural light was very soft. I used the Sigma 10-20mm wide angle to capture the clouds along with the tide which was slowly creeping in. This beautiful light on lasted about 1 minute!I got into photography in 2008 when I bought a Nikon D60. I have always been a nature lover and used to go out on trails and hikes.. I saw a lot of beautiful things, so the camera and shooting those scenes were a natural extension to my extra curricular activity. Over the last few years, I have had my images published for Florida English Journal, Fiat Blog, written a couple of articles on NJ’s Outdoor Life and had an exhibition for charity early this year. Currently I am working with an Art Gallery in Lisbon, Portugal to have my images displayed.Check out more of Karan’s work on his website and blog! Carol Haff's Swiftcurrent Lake

10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC (HSM)* F/10 200

This week’s Fan Photo of the Week was taken by Carol Haff using the 10-20mm F4-5.6 DC HSM.Here’s her story: This photo was shot from the bank of Swiftcurrent Lake, Glacier National Park, Montana, mid morning.  I was actually driving back to a trailhead to start a hike and glanced toward the lake and saw this absolutely breathtaking scene.  The clouds were enveloping the tops of the mountains, the water was calm.  I stopped, took out the tripod, and started shooting.  I have been visiting Glacier National Park for many years, but this has to be at the top of the list for some of the best morning scenery on Swiftcurrent Lake.Photography for me has been more recent.  I had shot film a bit back in the 80′s, but when digital was developed I was hooked.  My passion is hiking, my addiction Glacier National Park, and I started shooting to document the park and hiking trips, plus share photos with family and friends who do not hike, and that has been the focus of my photography thus far.  I was fortunate enough to be able to take an early retirement recently, so I hope now to spend more time learning, practicing, and pursuing landscape and nature photography.

I love landscape photography, using every spare minute I have I try to capture the beauty that we all too often take for granted. This image was taken using my favourite Wide Angle Lens, the Sigma 10-20mm.

Waterfalls along the Columbia River Gorge amaze visitors year after year. The hanging valley walls from Portland to the east provide one breath-taking view after another. In the fall, Latourelle Falls is ablaze not only with colorful foliage but also spectacular yellow lichens, which grow on the surrounding cliffs. A slow shutter speed allowed my SD1 to capture the creamy flow of water over the 249e plunge, and having the FOVEON sensor-equipped body anchored to my rock-solid Gitzo tripod allowed the camera to resolve unbelievable detail: If you zoom in on the image, you can see the hexagonal shapes comprising rocks face, evidence of volcanic formation. The large crystals formed through slow cooling.

Eagle Cliff Falls in Havana Glen Park, Montour Falls, New York, is one of the most picturesque waterfalls I have photographed. Inside an incredible amphitheater of siltstone, McClure Creek plunges over a forty foot drop and then swirls gracefully as it makes it way down to a narrow glen (which begins right behind where this picture was taken). Two neutral density filters reduced the light to allow the bubbles to swirl. An additional polarizer filter cut more light and intensified the fall colors. This HDR image was produced from a single exposure processed at 4 exposure settings in Adobe Camera Raw (-2; -1; 0; 1) and then combined in Photomatix Pro 3.2.

McClures Beach, in spectacular Point Reyes National Seashore, California, is one of my favorite coastal locations for photography. At sunset, colors paint the sky, beach, and water. A slow shutter speed and shooting low to the ground contributed to this calmingly intimate view of an otherwise powerful and pounding surf.

A lone sunflower towers above this midwestern prairie, with purple coneflowers, Queen Annees lace, and other plants below. Periodic burning is the recipe for keeping indigenous species prospering, driving out the succession of woodland species. A super wide angle of view allows the sunflower blossom, positioned about 18? from the front of the lens, to dominate while showing the delicate array of grasses and wildflowers surrounding the yellow bloom. Dawn at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge

10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC (HSM)*

This week's Fan Photo of the Week was taken by photographer Chris Hunter at one of his favorite early morning photography locations, Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. The photo was made with the Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DG HSM, on a tripod. This allowed me to darken the image, resulting in the photos that make up the midground and sky background (5 seconds and 2 seconds respectively). I manually combined the resulting images in Photoshop, using masks to blend the three image layers together. On top of that, a levels and hue saturation adjustment was done, and finally the image was sharpened using the Smart Sharpen filter.About Chris Chris Hunter is a professional graphic artist, photographer and website designer from Middletown, Rhode Island.
