Rainy days are great for macro photography but on this visit to the conservatory the weatherman was very wrong! I wasn’t going to turn back home after driving for over 2 hours so I decided to make the best of it. After photographing inside the conservatory for a while where the light was more diffused, I went out to the water lily pools to see what I could do even with the sunny conditions. I under exposed the ambient light by about 1 stop and powered my twin flashes up about 1 stop creating a balance of flash and ambient light. The extra reach of the 180mm again came in handy to allowing me to isolate this beautiful bud, bloom, and leaf in the middle of the pond. The water is black because the gardens dye the water to keep the algae bloom in check.
