Dawn at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge
This week's Fan Photo of the Week was taken by photographer Chris Hunter at one of his favorite early morning photography locations, Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge.
The photo was made with the Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DG HSM, on a tripod. He tells us:
This photo was taken at one of my favorite early morning photography locations, Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, located near the beaches of Newport, Rhode Island. The Wildlife Refuge is located on a unique peninsula at the far southeastern end of Aquidneck Island. It offers sweeping panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as scrub brush and heavily vegetative areas as well. Coming here early in the morning, you can capture some amazing pre-dawn photography.
This was the first set of images captured when I arrived at the Wildlife Refuge. Knowing that there was going to be a very wide exposure latitude to the scene, I setup on a tripod and first exposed for the foreground with a 10 second exposure. The Sigma 10-20mm lens performs great at f/16, and that aperture also allowed for a long exposure to let the waves become blurred with movement. Next, I took a series of photos, stepping down about two stops each exposure. This allowed me to darken the image, resulting in the photos that make up the midground and sky background (5 seconds and 2 seconds respectively).
I manually combined the resulting images in Photoshop, using masks to blend the three image layers together. On top of that, a levels and hue saturation adjustment was done, and finally the image was sharpened using the Smart Sharpen filter.
